What you want to practise is to wrap the text in the current cell. You can do this manually by pressing Alt + Enter every time you want a new line
Or, you can prepare this as the default behaviour by pressing the Wrap Text in the Home tab on the Ribbon. Now, whenever yous hitting enter, it will automatically wrap the text onto a new line rather than a new cell.

You have to apply Alt+Enter to enter a carriage return inside a cell.

- Edit a jail cell and type what you desire on the showtime "row"
- Press one of the following, depending on your Os:
Windows: Alt + EnterMac: Ctrl + Option + Enter
- Blazon what y'all want on the next "row" in the same cell
- Repeat every bit needed.
Note that inserting railroad vehicle returns with the fundamental combinations in a higher place produces different behavior than turning on Wrap Text. In the screenshot below, column A has the carriage returns and column B has Wrap Text turned on. Changing the width of a column with carriage returns doesn't remove them. Changing the width of a column with Wrap Text turned on volition change where the lines intermission.

Alt + Enter never worked for me. I had to become to Format Cells and make certain that the Number tab was set up to Text. That allowed me to see exactly as I had input. My result could have been Mac specific though.

Non quite the same equally the OP'southward question, but you can likewise wrap existing text by selecting the cells, and selectiing "Format Cells..." and then clicking the "Wrap Text" checkbox.

For those of you who are software developers and confused by all the talk virtually "wrap the text" and "why would 'word wrapping' need to exist enabled"... in Excel... if y'all want to accept a more one line of text... then "give-and-take wrapping" MUST be enabled. Yous tin test this "feature" past inserting a new line via

When I plough on "Wrap Text" for the cells, pressing Enter is however going downwards to the next row. I'yard working on a spreadsheet where I'm always entering multiple lines of text, then would really honey this to piece of work. Holding ALT every fourth dimension is besides cumbersome.
